The President of the International Council of the International Society for Human Rights, Thomas Schirrmacher, has congratulated the Georgian government on the successful containment of corruption during a visit to the Georgia Section of the ISHR.

With the Prime Minister

Schirrmacher, author of a book against corruption, congratulated the Prime Minister, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, and the Georgian Minister for Europe, David Bakradze, on their successful program against corruption at all levels, from everyday life up to high echelons of politics and the economy. In 2004, Georgia still had a poor ranking of 131ston Transparency International’s corruption index. In 2014 it was ranked 50th, the best value among the successor states of the Soviet Union with the exception of the Baltic States.

Everyday corruption has almost completely disappeared, which shows that the population also wishes to leave the past behind. Georgia, which has not even been admitted by the EU as a candidate for EU membership considering Russia, is thus a role model not only for EU candidate countries. It has also surpassed seven EU member states such as Italy and Romania on the corruption index.

The fight against corruption is a necessary prerequisite for the fight against human rights violations. Otherwise, human rights violators would all too easily buy themselves free if they were to be investigated.
